Fun activities to do on your own

Special occasions and holiday periods can often bring up feelings of loneliness if you don’t have anyone to share the cheer with. Perhaps you’ve just been so busy, spent a few too many days in a row with family or are an introvert at heart. The truth is, everyone benefits from taking a step back and giving themselves some quality ‘me’ time.

Being on your own doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Push pause on a pity party and instead think of alone time as a way to get to know yourself. Doing activities on your own is a way to recharge your batteries; it’s a form of self-care; you get to focus on your own thoughts and feelings and needs – and no one else’s.

If you’re staying in 

  • Curl up on the couch, in bed or a comfortable nook with a great book.
  • Create a playlist of your favourite tunes, lip sync or dance around the house.
  • Get experimental in the kitchen, indulge on your favourite food or eat in bed – no one’s there to judge you, except maybe your dog. Check out these easy meal ideas.
  • Put together a care package of all the things you know that can help boost your mood (even put it aside to open on a day you could really use a pick-me-up).
  • Do something creative, learn a new craft or make a gift for someone in need.
  • Pamper yourself: light a candle, have a relaxing bath or meditate.
  • Have a marathon movie day or binge on a TV series. There’s always something to catch up on or re-watch and there’s no one to talk over it.
  • Challenge yourself: complete a sudoku, listen to a podcast, watch a video tutorial or learn a new skill you can pop up your sleeve for the next time you’re in a social situation.
  • Have a digital detox: turn off your phone, disconnect the WIFI and spend a day totally unplugged.

If you’re going out

  • Soak up some vitamin D and take a long, peaceful walk on the beach or hike in the forest.
  • Check out a free gig or concert at a local cafe, library or park. While you sit and listen to the music you won’t need to worry about where your friends are.
  • Treat yourself to a meditation or yoga class, relaxing facial or massage.
  • Take a trip to somewhere new (even just the next town over). You can experience things at your own pace and get great photos of the views.
  • People-watch in a public place like a park or a shopping centre, sit back, and enjoy the show.
  • If it’s a public holiday, venture into town and embrace the uncluttered streets or empty open shops with no queues.
  • Spend some time with Mother Nature and see how you two get along when no one’s around. Here are five ideas of things to do outside.
  • Take yourself out for a meal. The best part is no one will be asking for a bite. If you’re uncomfortable entertaining yourself, bring along a book and immerse yourself in the food and the words.
